Which French politician would you like to have a beer with?

Following on from my last post about approval ratings, here’s another way to assess popularity – the beer test.

In the US, the beer test is used as a proxy for authenticity and likeability in politicians. The poll simply asks which politician voters would like to ‘have a beer’ with. Le Figaro has published the results of a similar poll in France.

According to the poll, the top three politicans voters would most like to ‘boire une bière’ with are Édouard Philippe (37%), Marine Le Pen (35%) and Gabriel Attal (34%).

President Emmanuel Macron was fourth on 28%, despite his prowess when it comes to downing a beer in one go at the recent rugby world cup.

So what would these beer-drinking voters like to talk about? It’s not clear the conversation would be that exciting. The top subject was the cost of living and inflation, followed by housing issues and the climate.

The more official ‘approval ratings’ poll this month also showed former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe as the most popular politician. This shows his strategy of sitting on the side-lines from his mayoralty in Le Havre seems to be working. He’s managing to stay visible and likeable to French voters as he prepares his presidential bid for 2027.
